Correct he was not a time traveller. OOps sorry, wish my typing worked. Joseph Aguirra (aka Aguerra) bn (according to military record) 1775 Guadeloupe West Indies. Joined 1 st Foot Colchester 1800

It seems that he must have left during tumultuous times. A summary lifted from Wikipedia:

1626: France takes possession, expelling Spanish settlers.
then various political upheavals but it remained French until the Seven Years War
1759 British captured Guadelope
1763 Treaty of Paris, France regained it (ceding Canadian colonies to Britain)
1789 French Revolution, chaos in Guadelope
1794 British retook it
1794, December, French retook it, slavery abolished, massacre of French colonists,
1802 French Expeditionary Force, ruling ex-slaves defeated

Thx I have a very detailed history of Guadeloupe at the time. I am guessing he swapped slavery for joining army to fight the British. Changed sides as some stage, again probably that or his life.

It seems to suggest your GGGGF was a POW taken to England.

The marriages don't seem to add up taking death dates of the wives into account but you probably have that info already.

If not already done, it might be worth contacting Paul Mady who is a direct descendant.

Took me a while to find this army record. Not sure if we've had it before (I know there has been a previous thread).

According to this he first enlisted on 1 September 1800 and served until 7 June 1801 with 52nd Foot. He then joined the Grenadier Guards in London on 16 June 1801 (I saw a 52nd Foot record for him earlier today and now cannot find it! It described him as a Black Man). He was a Drummer.
