Does Anc*stry Ever Get Paternal/Maternal Reversed

There are several (at least 4) DNA matches to my mother,  in the 20-29 cM range, all descended from a woman supposedly born in Wexford in the 1820s (no supporting evidence in any tree). Now the issue is that Anc*stry says that all of these matches are on my mother's paternal side, while this woman's name and date of birth strongly suggest that she must be from my mother's maternal side. Is this mistake possible with multiple matches?

Oh Yes!! I've had several mis-matches where I either know the individual that has been assigned to wrong parents or that I can trace using mutual matches and paperwork then found to be incorrect.

I have a few matches that are paternal to paternal but they have maternal to maternal links to some of my maternal cousins. A second  marriage and illegitimate ancestor in my tree are the root causes but it's taken a floating branch of over 100 people spanning 6 generations to solve it.

I'm not so confident I can solve the same sort of scenarios that point towards Ireland pre 1800 though even with a tree that most describe as far too deep and wide but oddly in the last week 6 pro genealogists have visited my tree for some reason so they must be looking at something somewhere.

Interested to know what system are you using that you can tell that "6 pro genealogists" visited your tree?

On the general point about Ireland, you win some and lose some. For families within Ireland, it can be tough. But many of my matches are with families in the US, that emigrated years ago. They often have some Irish ancestry, mixed in with others - German, Italian, Russian, whatever, maybe even English. As I and all my family are from Wexford, if they have an ancestor from Wexford, and all others are from other countries, then it is easy to see that our common link must be that Wexford born person.

I guess I wasn't thinking - my trees are private

I have seen the same under similar circumstances.  Rare, but definitely seen it at those cM levels.  Could always be both parental lines I guess although Ancestry does also specifically notify that also

I think Ancestry say in their blurb that this is 90-95% accurate. When I've seen it, it occurs with lower level cM, like below 30cM. And when it occurs there are often people who show up as maternal, paternal in the cluster. Both sides.

That they also listed as 'unknown' further shows this is not exact.

Sometimes it could be correct, but just a random coincidence, that they share DNA on the other side in a way you don't know about, but they connect to you genealogically via another parent. That is if we are talking about matches in the sub 35cM range (unweighted) which could be from links going back to the 17th century or more. But I have seen matches for some kits, in the 50cM+ range that I know cannot be correct, I am not sure why this happens.
