Heckington photo mystery
« on: Thursday 27 March 25 10:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,  I have a photo featuring my grandmother (Alice Maud Porter) with 5 other ladies, all seated and holding babies.  They are all formally dressed, with impressive hats and their clothes look Edwardian, meaning my grandmother is holding either my uncle Lionel (b.1902) or my aunt Iris (b.1906).  However the strange part is there is a man in the centre holding a doll and he is 'blacked up', as Morris Dancers sometimes are and holding a black baby doll, so any idea what was going on?

Without  seeing the photo perhaps it was some kind of children's party or christening party

Or a skit of some kind.  Are you able to post it?

Wasn’t aware Morris dancers did that.

The black make up  is a long tradition going back hundreds of years but the origins are unclear ,lots of theories and speculation as to why but no real evidence.
