James McKie married Mary Kerr 17th July 1884
« on: Thursday 27 March 25 05:02 GMT (UK) »
From a birth record for James and John McKie (Twins) born 19th September 1892 Mary McKie MS Kerr married James McKie July 1844.

I am unable to locate a marriage Mary and James in 1884. I wish to search by district but are unable to decipher the district they were married in (last part looks like town).

Appreciate any help
Thanks
David De Maine

The place on the marriage certificate is difficult to workout
It seems to start with "C" and end in ....."town"

I wonder if it is supposed to be "Colston" or  "Calton".

Just for clarity, RD St George is an Edinburgh parish. See map here:

https://www.hoodfamily.info/misc/miscedinmaplarge.html

St George(s) is shown at the West End of Princes Street, which unfortunately doesn’t match with Calton which is at the other end of Princes Street.

Added: correction and see discussion below. St George is a Registration District and does’t seem to correspond with St George’s parish.

According to the marriage certificate they were married at the Rutland Hotel, Rutland Street, Edinburgh which is in fact just outside St Georges; you can see it on the map that I linked to, across Lothian Road from the marked church of St Cuthbert's.

Their addresses were 3 Leslie Place and 26 Drumsheugh Gardens, neither of which is in St Georges nor in the Calton area.

If you send me a PM with your email address I'll send you a copy of the certificate.

Added: see below reply #8 – I no longer think this is the correct marriage. Apologies for confusing the thread.

Town Plan showing the Rutland Hotel at the extreme north end of Rutland Street, at the junction with Princes Street and Lothian Road.

I’m not sure how useful the map that I posted is with respect to defining St George RD (as opposed to parish). The other marriage that is recorded on the same page as the McKie-Kerr marriage took place in Scotland Street, which is over by Canonmills, nowhere near the area marked on the map asSt George’s.

Still no idea what the mystery placename is though.

There is a very useful, albeit somewhat temperamental, boundary viewer at NLS. Here is a view with St Georges selected in the relevant period, and zoomed out so that you can get your bearings. Zoom in to see that the Rutland Hotel was indeed St Georges at that date.

How embarassing: I don’t think this Edinburgh marriage is the same couple. Apart from the date discrepancy, the name of the informant at the birth `(mother Mary McKie) doesn’t match the name on the marriage record. Oh well – at least I learned a lot about Edinburgh RDs and the Rutland Hotel.
