Gibraltar 1938
« on: Wednesday 26 March 25 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My Grandad joined The King's Regiment (Liverpool) in December 1936.

I believe he was posted to Gibraltar in February 1938.

Does anyone know what Barracks a soldier during this year would have been posted to?

My Grandad's details:

Arthur Robert Moore
B. 13/12/1916 in Earlestown, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire.
Service number: 370976
The King's Regiment

Many thanks, Rowan Tree

Yes - I have Googled, but I'm not sure I really know the answer. That's why I've posted here. I hoped someone with knowledge and expertise on Gibraltar would be kind enough to share their wisdom with me.

I've been able to rule out some barracks because they didn't exist until after the date I'm looking at.

I'm glad I've been able to narrow it down but I'm still reading about references to Lathbury Barracks, South Barracks, Buena Vista Barracks and Grand Casements Barracks (used into the 1950s, I believe). I've probably missed some.
The point is, I've learnt about lots of barracks, but I still don't know the answer to my question. That's why I asked for help.

Do you know the answer yourself? If you do, it'd be nice if you shared it with me.

Not an easy search with 2 establishments at Leeds and Aldershot named "Gibraltar Barracks!" However, have come up with a possibility?

The Yorkshire Evening Post, 2 Dec 1937, lists the various donations made to a children's Xmas fund and among those listed is -
Sergeants' Mess, 1st Bt K.O.Y.L.I., South Barracks, Gibraltar

Snipped from the Belfast News Letter, 7 Mar 1938

This is a great suggestion.

I received his service records yesterday.

I feel terrible because I'm doing such an awful job of reading/understanding them.

There are so many abbreviations and code within the service records. It's quite possible his barracks are named in his records, it's simply that I've not been able to decode and understand what's in front of me.

You're such a star, you know! Thanks so much for the effort you've given this.

I don't think my original post was clear (apologies).

I meant the literal island of Gibraltar (in-between Spain and Africa).

My grandad was posted to Gibraltar from Seaforth Barracks.

I wondered if it was possible to work out which barracks he was stationed in from the dates he was on the island.

I'm feeling like such a novice this week. It's frustrating. I've got this amazing document in front of me (my grandad's service records) and I'm really struggling to understand it.

Sorry for rambling. And thank you again. You're ace 🌟

I was looking for barracks in Gib in the Med. The problem arose when using "barracks" and "gibraltar" in an "all words" search!

If I knew the answer I would have said so and not wasted my time suggesting you Google.
