JULIUS TILLETT 52nd (The Oxfordshire) Regiment Of Foot 1851
« on: Wednesday 26 March 25 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for help with the above soldier (and his regiment) please.

Julius was born in Suffolk in 1830. In 1851 he married Alice Taylor in Preston, Lancashire giving his address as Cahir Barracks. These appear to be in Kilcommon, Tipperary. Elsewhere I have found that the 52nd was based in Limerick.
Q1: Why was he in Preston?

Alice gave birth to a baby son in September 1853, which puts Julius in Preston late 1852, early 1853 so it looks as if he was there for a while. The baby died in October 1853. In December 1857 Alice remarries as a widow. This gives a window for Julius's death from Dec 1852-Dec 1857 but.....nada.

Q2: What happened to Julius? Does he appear in any military records beyond 1851? Or any records at all?

Thanks

The 52nd Regiment went to India (from Ireland) in 1853 and remained there until 1865. They had been stationed at Fulwood barracks in Preston for a couple of years up to 1850, which probably explains how Julius met Alice.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Thanks for the info re the 52nd in Preston. I did my initial officer candidate interview in those barracks before the joys of Westbury! How ironic. Full circle! I had found Ireland and India but nothing on Preson. Is there a link to a reference source please?

Yes, the baby, named after his father, died. Diarrhea for 6 days!

Obviously I can't tell whether the father was still alive when this happened. Maybe Julius (father) went off to India, leaving Alice alone? If the older Julius didn't die, then this would make her second marriage bigamous. So now, I need help on finding Julius!

Thanks again

Wow. Thanks. They must have met when they were very young and he appears to have come back to Preston, from Ireland, to marry her. I wonder what happened next?
