DOUGLAS GERALD BAMFIELD born 1924 London
• Joined Royal Navy Jan 1940 as boy seaman
• Posted to Russian and Malta convoys in WW2
• Awarded The War Medal 1939-45 with a bronze oak leaf clasp
• In 1955 he was in the Royal New Zealand Navy
Can anyone shed some light on why he was awarded a bronze oak leaf clasp.

The War Medal 1939-1945 was awarded to any serving 28 days or more.
A bronze oak leaf emblem is worn on the ribbon to signify a mention in despatches, a King's Commendation for Brave Conduct, or a King's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air.

Thanks, where can I find the details of why he was awarded the clasp.
This is the man I am looking for. I have his NZ records but would like to know more about his UK service.
Thanks

You might be able to match a despatch with his record, and have a guess.
