On a marriage certificate where it usually states 'by banns' it states by S.R.Certificate any ideas what it means, please. The marriage is 1878 in Rochdale.

"By Superintendent Registrar's certificate".

I believe this is civil authorisation for a marriage to take place in an Anglican church, without the need for banns or a common marriage licence.

Hopefully AntonyMMM will see this thread and explain further.

As above - it means that the couple chose to "give notice" to the registrar rather than have banns read.

Much rarer to see than banns for a church (CofE)  wedding, but just as valid.

Thank you Anthony

That makes sense as couple involved may have had different religions.
