Charlotte Douglass Burial
« on: Monday 24 March 25 16:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My ggg-grandmother, Charlotte Douglass was buried on 15th Aug 1824 in the parish of St Leonard, Shoredithch. The record is attached (right hand side of document and 4th entry down). The entry says she resided at Hoxton.

Does anyone know if St John the Baptist, Hoxton was part of St Leonard's Parish in 1824. I see that it has its own churchyard.

So, I am wondering whether she was buried at St Leonard's or Hoxton.

I know that two of the children were baptised at St Leonard's earlier in 1824.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gordon

Hoping this might help, which I copied from St. John's Church, Hoxton website. It looks to me that St. John's was separate to St Leonard's.

"St John’s Hoxton was established in 1826 as a ‘Chapel of Ease’ in the Parish of Shoreditch. It soon became an independent parish church serving the rapidly growing population of Hoxton. In 1826 it was the only parish church serving Hoxton - but by 1896 there were 9 parishes in Hoxton! In the 21st century, we’re back down to three parishes serving our neighbourhood: Holy Trinity, St Anne’s and St John’s. "

Thanks,

Very useful to know this, as she died in 1824 before St John's was established.
