Occupation- Proprietor of Houses
« on: Sunday 23 March 25 17:08 GMT (UK) »
... on 1861 census for 76 Aitchison St, Airdrie for my 75 year old widowed ancestor, Ann (Buchanan) Thomson.

Does anyone know what that would entail/mean please?

Also what does the number 2 in the last column refer to?

Many thanks in advance.

In the 1861 census the last column on the right referred to the number of rooms in the house.
The number "2" in your census meant that there were two rooms with one or more windows.
So, it was what was colloquially know as a "Room and Kitchen".
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.
