Her age given when she died in 1894 was 58. This may not have been correct. Annie is on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 and 1891 census in Halifax.

Hi SnowyHog

Was Ann Taylor on the 1871c a visitor ???  or residing with the Stocks family at their  abode, it says she is a book binder (a very skilled vocation) which usually means a trade with a lot of training or apprenticeship to live with a master book binder and at age 14 years old would be the beginning of her apprenticeship that took 7 years to complete usualy with possible records. Thus its a job that is likely she kept in later census years

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Yes, she was a visitor,  she was listed as a Niece, so obviously that could mean just there for an hour when the census form was filled out, or longer but I assume would have been listed as a border then.

Long shot

Relationships on census entries were usually to head of household which suggests the possibility of a Stocks/Taylor marriage.

Have you already checked that out?

Yes, to the best of my knowledge. Only Sister related to John that had children was Sarah, who married Edwin Halliwell.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I don't think Ann Taylor is from the Stocks side, I would be 99% certain on that. I would have hoped to find on the Birth Gro search a Ann Taylor born London or in and around London with a mothers surname of Walker or Stocks but neither. I have struggled to find Ann Elizabeth Stocks birth or 1841 census entry, too. Her father is given as William    Walker on both her marriages.  It is annoying as Ancestry and Family search will sometimes show suggestion of possible matches on a later census etc, but not in Ann Taylor's case. I will check out findmypast and see if there are any leads there. Thanks again.

I'm not so sure Sarah Stocks was the only sister of John Stocks on the 1871 census

According to the 1841 census

Geo Stocks age 45 Yorkshire

Hannah Stocks age 45  Yorkshire

( George Stocks X Hannah Blakley above married in Huddersfield 27 August 1815 - its unusual to wait 5 years to have children - thus makes me think a possible sister was born between 1815 to 1820 who was married by the 1841 census living elsewhere)

William Stocks age 20 Yorkshire

Sarah Stocks age 20 Yorkshire

(a 10 year gap of no children till  John  Stocks and possible room for an elder sister who is married or had an illegitimate child out of wedlock by 1841)

John Stocks aged 10 Yorkshire

(Baptised St Peter's Church Huddersfield 1831 John son of George & Hannah Stokes abode Rastrick)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
