There is a vessel ‘Renown’ master Oakley sailing up and down the east coast carrying wheat, barley and similar products at least 1818-1924

(From the newspapers)
E.g

But there seem to be many Oakley men who were at sea.
Merchant seamen records on FindMyPast don’t start until 1835.

Ancestry is the place to look. Record set is UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927. Beware - some are in reverse order, so when the search takes you to the front page, subsequent pages are before that one!
And newspapers often carried shipping reports, naming the vessel, the master, destination and departure date. That can be a long and tedious search, but a less common name like Oakley may make it a bit easier.

1850 is rather too late for this one!

Thanks Shaun,

I did see these records on Familysearch earlier today before posting here.

There is also a Joseph Oakley born 27 Dec 1814 and baptised 13 Jul 1823 on Ancestry
Son of Richard Oakley, seaman and wife Ann.

I'll see what I can find on them

Mick
