Martha Swindel(L)'s James Bradley Disley Cheshire
« on: Wednesday 19 March 25 00:01 GMT (UK) »
I have a brick wall trying to find details of

Martha Swindells  (could be swindell)
I esttimate she was born in about 1812/1813  around Disley Cheshire

I have her marriage to James Bradley.... 12 Jan 1834 Disley Cheshire

James is on the 1881 census with a son Edwin as a widow ... also recorded at the same address is John William Marshall and his wife Ann who is a daughter of James and Martha

my best guess is that Martha died before the 1871 census

but I can't find anything re a baptism for either James Bradley (abt 1812-1813) or Martha Swindells

although there is a bapt for James  in Hollinwood, St Margaret, Lancashire, England 16 May 1813 that could be a possibility???

Any advice would be grately appreciated!!

There's a Martha Swindells baptised 9 May 1813, father John mother Charlotte at Disley.
A John Swindells married Charlotte Heginbotham 3 Dec 1808 St Mary's Stockport.
There's a lovely image of their marriage.
No parents' names.

Looks like Nancy, first child, baptised 26 Dec 1809 at Disley.
Several others.

1851 Census has John, aged 45,  and Charlotte aged 53, at Heaton Norris,
He was born Stockport, she was born Disley.

There are several John Swindells born in Stockport around the right time frame. You may have to do some thorough searching.

The only Charlotte Heginbotham/Higginbottom etc that shows is that of a Charlotte/Charlot Higgenbothom 11 July 1786 in Disley. That would make her 65 in 1851, not 56. She may have been unsure about how old she really was, or the enumerator mis-transposed the numbers, or mis-heard, or she was 'economical with the truth'!, especially if she was older than John Swindells. Many people did this. Lots of reasons it may not be correct.
Father William, mother Amy/Eamy.

William Higginbotham married Amy Cotterel 19 August 1778 Stockport.
He was a husbandman.

The marriage of James Bradley and Martha Swindells 12 Jan 1834 was at Stockport, (unless you've also found it in the Disley registers). They were both of the parish of Disley. Bachelor and spinster.
No parents' names. or ages.

There's a death registration of a James Bradley in 1883, registration district Stockport, under which Disley probably came at that time, aged 67, which may be him. Added: Not him. See below.

A couple in the Civil Registration indexes for Martha Bradley in the 1860s. (James is a widower by 1871).
A Martha Swindells was buried at Disley 8 Dec 1866 aged 67. residence Hague Bar - a mile NE of Disley.
Also a John Swindells at Hague Bar 13 Sept 1868 aged 78, so that Martha may relate to this John.

James Bradley buried 24th Sept 1887 at Disley, aged 74.
Also Edwin Bradley 7 Dec 1887 at Disley aged 32.
This must be the son who was on the 1881 Census.

Disley register transcripts are on this site:

http://www.disley.net/disley_pr.html

http://www.disley.net/disley_burials/disley_burials.html

It would be well worth while you going through them again, as I'e only done it very quickly.
And I haven't checked the baptisms or marriages.

Charlotte Swindells was buried 19 nov 1862, aged 76 at Disley, which makes a birth year of 1786, as found above. Bingo!

Lots for you to research.  :)
