I have to admit to being mystified with this one.

We all seem to be stumped, Jen.

James and Edith Story and their son Norman seem to be living with his parents in 1939.

Edith born 31 May 00  For some reason her name was altered to Storey at some point. And was that then cancelled, since it is crossed out in green ink? I can't make sense of that.

I agree with you both ???

James Hedworth Story died in 1951.

I think John Sidney Story and James Hedworth Story were brothers.

We may have lost Eleanor between 1950 and 1959?

I agree they are brothers 1911 census John Sidney  & James Hedworth Story with their parents & siblings in West Denton, Northumberland

There doesn't appear to be a marriage entry for John S & Edith after the death of her husband in 1951

I've looked at FreeBMD for a death between 1950 - 1959 with just first name Eleanor & initial D in case she was using a different surname but nothing stands out  :-\

There is a marriage entry 1958 Nthmbld for a E Story to T L B Carmichael  :-\ but have not looked further into this couple

John Sidney Story dob 15 Aug 1903, civil servant
Departure Date   20 Jul 1959
Departure Port   England
Ship Name   Jutlandia
Destination Port   Aden, Yemen
E Story born 31 5 1900, housewife - address 10 Denhill Park, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Looking at that outward passenger record
Country of last permanent residence (Residence for more than 12 months)
For John Sidney and Edith Story it says N. Ireland

So could Eleanor have died in Northern Ireland? And could even John have remarried to Edith there?

I can't find anything definite, but there is a short newspaper report, age is right, but maybe a coincidence? :-\

Belfast Telegraph, 2 July 1955
Suicide verdict on woman
A VERDICT of suicide by gas poisoning was returned by the Coroner, Dr. H. Baird, at an inquest in Glengormley yesterday on Mrs. Eleanor Storey (51) of Farmley Crescent, Glengormiey.

I’ve been looking at that Northern Ireland connection too.
The date on the alteration to Edith’s record in the 1939 register was 1956. Marriage to John? It’s marked m/c for marriage certificate?

GRONI is unavailable until tomorrow morning  >:(

Thankyou for all your hard work  :)

I was actually told a story years ago that Nelly did/tried to kill herself (gas) so the newspaper article could be related to her? I think this was because her husband died and she was heartbroken? Did John die before 1955? Was it to do with the war?

Have you read all the replies relating to John? Reply #19 has details of him in 1959 and in the 1970’s ( with Edith)

I think we are fairly confident that John died in 1980 as per your reply #17.

Just for information:

Edith died on 16th May 1980 and John on the 16th August 1980.

They have identically worded entries in the Teesside Crematorium Book of Remembrance.

In both cases you need to click through a couple of pages to find the entries.

Is it worth trying ‘Eleanor Davison at Muggleswick, Lanchester, Durham, England in 1921? A longshot.
