Help with 1841 census please
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 14:20 BST (UK) »
I am searching through the 1841 Lancashire census on Stepping Stones for my partner's ancestors. I have found some of them in piece 501 at Woodplumpton, Inskip and Sowerby without too much trouble, but where will I find Myerscough? On the map it looks very close to those villages, but I can't see it listed for any of the piece numbers that Stepping Stones have put online yet. I'm just wondering if it is there but listed under another village, or if I have to wait? I tried google and it came up with piece 558, but that seems to be around the city of Lancaster - surely Myerscough didn't really come into that piece, did it? Kate.

Hi,

HO 107/554 PARISH: Lancaster (part), TOWNSHIP: Bleasdale, Fulwood, Myerscough, Preesall with Hackensall, Stalmine with Staynal

Using the National Archives catalogue to locat Parishes is easy.  On the search screen type the parish in the first box and the year range as 1841 to 1841 (or whatever you need).

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp?j=1

With the census records you then have the piece, but sometimes have to scan through each enumeration district until you find the correct bit.

Happy hunting

Thanks, I already saw that, but I was just wondering if there could be two places called Myerscough because I still don't see what it would be doing in that piece!

Hi Kate,

The piece you quoted was 558.  The National Archives only gives the one result, HO 107/554 for Myerscough.

I don't know what the reference is for the other one that Jinks found.   Maybe it is just too small to be indexed separately?  Perhaps you could try one of the nearby parishes he gives and see if you can come across it.

Hi,

The explaination is that Mysercough was a Township in the PARISH of Lancaster. So even though it was virtually 'next door' to Inskip and Woodplumton (both in the Parish of St. Michaels),  it was in a different Parish and hence on a completely different part of the census.

Does this make sense?

Regards,

Mo

Thanks very much Mo.  I'll just have to wait for Stepping Stones to make that one available.

Hi,

You could always try posting a lookup for the 1841 on Rootschat.  There may be someone here who has that elusive bit of information for you.  Don't forget to include as many details as possible about the family you are trying to find.

Good luck

Sue
