If you go to
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can search for births of children using the mother's maiden surname. It may not pick up all of them, as the work of adding mothers' maiden surnames to the index is still incomplete.
You can also search for deaths after 1974 using mother's maiden surnames. You can also search for deaths of married women at any time after 1855 using both their maiden and their married surnames.
You can also view the 1914 and 1943 marriages, which will tell you the full names of the couples, including their mothers' maiden surnames.
Searching the indexes is free of charge but there a small fee is payable to to view certificates.
