Druce family of Lopen
« on: Saturday 08 March 25 01:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi, would anyone be able to help me locate the dob and birth place/any info for George Druce please?

His descendants through his son Robert Druce stay in Lopen for a few generations. According to Somerset Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812, George's son Robert was baptised in Lopen on 11 Apr 1725 and Robert's mother is named as Mary.

I believe Robert married Mary Shore in on 22 Feb 1749 in Merriott, Somerset.

I have no marriage details for George and Mary. Their other children (via free reg) baptised on Lopen appear to be Mary (bpt 1726), Grace (bpt 1731), Ann (1734) and Elizabeth (1739) - so perhaps pointing to George and Mary's marriage in 1720s??

I've tried a more generic South Petherton search but no joy so far. So not sure if George comes from Lopen or another parish?? Any help much appreciated. Thanks  :)

Hi
Some extra children for George and Mary ,so we have
Richard 17.2.1722
Rob 1725
Mary 1726
Grace and Isaac 29.8.1731
Anne 11.3.1733
Elizabeth 1739

I can't see a marriage but I think george came from Chiselborough just down the road

George s of Richard and Rachell Druse baptised 18.8.1695
Siblings  Robert buried 30.10.1698 , Ursula bapt 12.8.1700 ,Richard 18.5.1712  buried 25.7.1713

Rachel buried 30.9.1716 Richard 4.1.1727
Chiselborough seems difficult to find online  and I've only seen the index.

But it does look like them

Thank you so much for this lead. After inputting the information the somerset transcripts came up on ancestry. I'm not surprised it wasn't easy to find as the surnames had been translated as Rust and Bruce!

I managed to find most of the names below. Not sure how reliable they are as clergy copies from the originals?

For example, the date I found for George in the record is bapt 3 Jan 1702 rather than 18.8.1695 so I'm not sure if this is a transcript error or if they had another son called George, which I know is common?

The book is a bit scrappy, hard to read and missing pages but I'll take what I can find! :)

Plenty to look into now. Thanks again.

I'm a bit confused as to what records you found on Ancestry?

You can find the images of the actual parish registers of Chiselborough (written at the time by the vicar or some clerk or other) (go to Search > Birth, Marriage & Death including Parish > Somerset, England,Church of England Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1531-1812 > then Browse This Collection choosing Chiselborough 1695-1795).

There is a Robert's burial (30.10.1698) on P. 43 and his baptism (I would say the record says Robert not George) on P.58 (18.08.1695)
Later years are on earlier pages ! I haven't read all those.
P. 45 a Rachell was buried 17.03.1705, Ursula's baptism is P.56, also P. 56 George baptised 03.01.1702 (1703 by our calendar)

The earlier register ends in 1664 so even if Richard and Rachel married in Chiselborough it won't be found  unfortunately, and probably not George and Mary's marriage either.

Hope that helps.
Somerset: Poole, Hutchings/Hutchin(s), Harvey/Harvie, Bullen

Really helpful, thanks. You're right that I can't find George and Mary's marriage either, which is a shame. But managed to go through the registers and pick out as many Druce's as possible!
