"DNA Trail - The Promise" on BBC Sounds
« on: Wednesday 05 March 25 13:26 GMT (UK) »

This is a BBC Radio 8 part series concerning "a young woman's deathbed promise to her father that takes her on a remarkable journey from the south coast of England to the other side of the world to solve a family mystery".

Its much more general genealogy then the BBC more DNA focused "The Gift" series and has some interesting genealogy history in it too as the "journey" begins back in the 1980s.

It is somewhat overwought and overly sentimental on occasions in that familiar BBC way and each short 20 minute episode spends time describing the last and next episode but it is interesting and a good listen.

I found "The Gift" series interesting. "The Promise" sounds just as good by your post, will look it up - thanks.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ve just finished listening to it all on BBC Sounds. I’m really torn, I enjoyed the story and can absolutely understand the drive to uncover the truth but really did feel for the other family impacted in such a significant way (trying not to give spoilers). I did think the pair researching came off quite badly at times and needed to respect the families wishes more than they did.

It was an amazing story though!

I agree.  It is an unbelievable story at any level but it really got me thinking about the scruples of such a hunt.  There does seem a sense of entitlement on behalf of the protagonists but such a decision is binary - you either go for it or you dont and they did Option 1!!!  My concerns are somewhat lessened by the fascinating information that was given to them in that very first call - what was all that about?  They couldnt have been any surer of their claim, especially back then.  Very engrossing indeed

Well I have listened to the starter promo and the first two episodes.

It is a bit long winded and disjointed in the way it has been put together and some of the infills are difficult to hear because of mumbling and the sound effects.

We shall have to see how it pans out.

I keep comparing it to The Gift, perhaps that is why I feel a bit negative about it so far.

I’ve blitzed it and finished listening to all the episodes.

It is well worth listening too.

No spoilers.
