The school records may still be around, but probably in the back of a dusty cupboard, so the school would need some notice to go rooting for them.
You could check the National Archives in Dublin for any possible estate records - again, do it in advance and order them if any, as they may not be held on site.

Hello again

Thank you both for confirming what I thought about the passenger lists; we live in North West Wales and Holyhead is only about 30 minutes away so a day trip to Dublin was a regular occurrence when we were kids - in those days no records were kept so I thought it would be the same.

Thanks Dublin50 - yes agreed about the school records - the local archives here hold the school records so I thought that might be a chance.   I'll have a browse at the national archive.

You've all been a great help and I really appreciate it; its been really interesting researching another country's history.
