Copy of Birth Reg. Shilelagh, Wicklwow 1908
« on: Monday 03 March 25 14:41 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon
We have recently discovered that a friend's family headed to ireland for a couple of years to quarry.   Between the census'.   One of their children (at least ) was born whilst over there and I have found a record of the registration but have no further idea how to go about getting more information.   Have never done any Irish research before.  There are at least two children who died according to the 1911 and there are a couple of big gaps between the children on the 1911.   So we were wondering whether any of the children died in Ireland.

Can anyone help me please.

This is the information I have from A*  am I able to get any more information, my friend wants to visit the locality where the family lived.

Name   Hugh Griffith Jones
Birth Quarter   Oct-Nov-Dec  1908
Birth Place   Shillelagh, Ireland
Birth Registration Date   Dec 1908
Volume   2
Page   809
FHL Film Number   101072

Thank you
Nesta

Parents shown as Hugh Griffith Jones & Ellen Hughes - when & where did they marry?  Can't see a marriage on freebmd with the middle name of Griffith?

I searched the Irish statutory death records for the Shillelagh registration area 1901 - 1911 but did not find any child Jones deaths at all.

Use GRO online to identify possible Jones births with mmn Hughes in Merionethshire then check for deaths prior to 1911.  6 children born - 2 died according to 1911

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You may have a problem - 1911 says married 15yrs.  Presumably in Festiniog.  There are 2 Hugh Jones marriages 1894 & 1895 & there is an Ellen Hughes on the same page on each entry.

The Hugh Jones with son b Ireland was b Caernarvon - the other Merionethshire

There was a Slate Quarry near Carnew on the estate of Earl Fitzwilliam which they claim in 1863 was open almost 100 years ago, last mention of it in a search of newspapers is when it was sold in 2006.
Named as Kilcavan Quarry Carnew in lots of ads.

There was a fire there in 1909 in the engine room which resulted in, according to the paper “A number of men have been thrown idle” perhaps that was the reason for the family returning to England.

Apologies - disappeared off on holiday whilst my friend looked for more information.   Thank you again for all the information, they are off to Carew in the next few days to see where their great-grandparents were.

We found the family bible which listed all the children born and the dates they died and they didn't just lose two children before 1911 (daughters) but another little boy died in 1915 aged 18 months.

A daughter was born in Wales in 1905, their son was born in Ireland in 1908 and they were back in Wales by the 1911 census so we have really narrowed down the timescale for when they were in Ireland.  As Sinann says

so I agree with their supposition that the fire caused their return to Wales.

If they are in existence I would think about checking passenger records and possibly school records.    The family were non-conformist so I do not think there would be any parish church records.  There may be estate records but I doubt it.   Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Regards
Nesta

There won't be any passenger records for what was essentially an internal ferry in the UK.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)
