Another Birth Registration search Failure
« on: Sunday 02 March 25 21:00 GMT (UK) »
I'll probably kick myself when this is found but it defeats me, despite the individuals first name being fairly uncommon.

I'm looking for the birth registration of Adeline Todd, born around 1897 of parents John Todd and Mary Anne (Minnie) Thompson.

Adeline is shown on the 1901 Census living with parents and siblings at 76 Matchet St. Belfast, age 4 (the first name is badly written so the transcription has her as Aalak). Then she is on the 1911 Census at 29 Eccles St. age 14 (her first name looks like Adiline).

She married James Burgess on Christmas Day 1916 - James was a soldier so they got married perhaps while he was home on leave. They went on to have two children, Dorothea and John, whose birth details I have.

Anyway - can anyone find Adelines Birth Registration? I have the registrations of all of her siblings but I can't find hers. Thanks.

And she has a slew of interesting names some of which look like family names to help in further research

Perfect thank you. I see her first name is spelt differently so that would have blocked me. Also, even though I tried specifying no first name and looked for Todds around that date, I was looking for births in Belfast, not Lisburn. So I still didn't see it. Frustrating.

Too many variables for me it seems. And yes, what a list of names she's been given, quite impressive. No idea who those ancestors might be.

Just one question - are there any tips on searching? eg can wild cards be used - like searching for a first name like Ad? or Ad*. I've never found that to work really.

Anyway, another success so thanks again.

The birth registration was very easy to find on Irish Genealogy (even with the horrible new format)- surname=todd, year=1897, first name=ade*. If that hadn't worked the next option was to expand the years searched.
Another way would be to search on GRONI with surname, mother's maiden name and year range. It would have picked up the birth and you could have then gone to Irish Genealogy for full details from the registration.

Great thanks. I'm sure I tried searching for Ade* but of course I probably had Belfast in the search criteria too at that point. Actually, I think that was my problem all along. I should have seen that, of all the six of Adelines siblings, only two were born at the same address. Such a lot of moving about these people did back then.

Thanks for tip using GRONI as a starting point.

Hi Leon47,
Just saw your message about birth registration, I also had trouble
                     searching for family.
If you can’t find under Belfast try searching the nearest registration
                     to it, ie Lisburn, Newtownards.

                    Best of luck,    Billy.

He's already found all six siblings....five born in Belfast and one in Lisburn.

Researching: Cuthbertson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Australia; Hunter – Co. Derry; Jackson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Canada; Scott – Co. Derry; Neilly – Co. Antrim & USA; McCurdy – Co. Antrim; Nixon – Co. Cavan, Co. Donegal, Canada & USA; Ryan & Noble – Co. Sligo

Yes, I've been doing this for about a year now and I'm usually OK at finding peoples birth/death/marriage registrations. It's the occasional ones that really give me a problem. Probably, as I've said, because I make some assumptions and forget that it's best to go with one assumption at a time.

Like assume a birth year range for a first search, then assume a place, then maybe an age (for marriage or death) but don't use all assumptions in the same search.

Another assumption is the name - Dorathea is found as Dora, Adeline is born as Adelaide, John M Wilson is transcribed as McWilson - it's a minefield.
