Problems with storage on Samsung tablet.
« on: Thursday 27 February 25 14:50 GMT (UK) »
I recently bought a 64gb sd card for use in my Samsung tablet. I did a lot of research beforehand, checking the maximum size that can be used in my tablet, I also read a lot of reviews for the particular card I was looking at  (it's a reputable brand) and instructions on how to insert it properly.

When the card arrived I inserted it and proceeded to transfer lots of images and documents to it. They're all showing up in the file manager and I can open them from there, the storage on the sd card is showing as 1.12gb. The internal storage percentage has also decreased.

The problem I'm now encountering is that when I open an image I get a message saying 'Some gallery features may not work. Go to My Files to free up some space." I haven't had any problems in editing and saving images since I moved them to the sd card but there is another problem.
There are a lot of apps on my tablet that need updating but when I go to do so I get a message saying there isn't enough space and suggests apps that I might want to remove. I don't want to do that and the advice I've read is not to store apps on the sd card.

I'm thoroughly perplexed, can anyone help please?

Have you recently had a Samsung update to install?

I had something similar on my phone which proved to have been caused by the latest Samsung update which had overridden instructions and was saving everything from all apps directly to the phone itself.  All had to be amended by hand and the problem is now resolved.

Could it be something similar on your tablet?

As I understand it you can manually move many (but not all) apps from the phone/tablet memory to the SD card. This is done by accessing the INFO option for the app.
BUT ...... when the app is updated from the store (and some apps are updated several times a week), it is moved BACK AGAIN to the phone/tablet memory.
This makes the storing of apps on an SD card a pointless exercise which will not save you any space.
Of course, you may choose to store video, photos, music etc on the SD card.

I've just checked, my tablet was last updated on 5th February 2023, that update was the most recent. My apps are already taking up 24gb of space, the updates require 1100 mb. I've moved a huge amount of photos and videos to the sd card,  I don't store music.
Apparently the apps work more efficiently if they're stored in the device's internal storage. After having a scout around I've been given the opportunity to delete an unused app called Samsung Kids, which I didn't even know was there. Having deleted it I thought I'd be able to update one app but I can't even do that.

Can't get my head around all this.  :-\
