Ruhleben Internment camp, Germany, WW1
« on: Thursday 27 February 25 04:19 GMT (UK) »
I believe my Great Grandfather, George Roberts, who was a British Merchant Seaman, was arrested in Hamburg the day Britain declared war on Germany.
I am hoping to find a list of those interned and some of the history about the camp. I also think he was released before the end of the war. I would like to know why.
I know only civilians were held here and only the perimeter of the camp was guarded by Germany.
Looking forward to any help you have. Thank you.

Is this your great grandfather?

G. G. Roberts, of Holyhead, was named in a list of merchant seamen interned at Ruhleben, as published by the Scotsman newspaper on 7/1/1915 (p.7).

George Roberts was born in 1857 and I presume it is G Roberts, ships officer (2nd Mate), 51 Bede St, Tyne Docks, South Shields (Released 21/12/1915) that you are interested in.
He was aboard the steamship FLEETWING, official number, 125421, detained 4 August 1914.

This was 2nd Mate, G.G. Roberts who was aboard CITY OF CADIZ, official number, 45019. Steamship detained 4 August 1914. I believe this is not the man the op is searching for.

Hello

I also have a merchant seaman relative who was interned at Ruhleben. This my website page for him.

https://www.hoopertapestry.com/charles-dugay-1868

There is a lot of information about Ruhleben online - one site has a list of names - I'll look it out for you.

Thank you so much for all the replies. As far as I know my George Roberts didn't have a second name.
He was on the Fleetwing but I thought he was Able Seaman. I guess that could change.
He was born in Fundenhall, Norfolk, in 1857.
Thank you for the sites you have recommended. I will look at those too.
