Tracing Death certificate and will
« on: Wednesday 26 February 25 07:21 GMT (UK) »
My great-grandfather, MICHAEL CULLEN died on the 24th August 1881 at his home in Carrick, Ballinlough, County Roscommon. He was 52 years old and was buried in Kiltullagh graveyard. Michael’s will was proved at Tuam by John Doyle of Cappagh, County Mayo, farmer and sole executor, which I have a copy of.

However there is no death certificate on the above website and I have tried searching with the alternative name used by some of my family in the past – Cullinane (with and without the “e”) to no avail. I just want to find out what the cause of death was at such a young age. Just wondering if any of our readers have any other sources for finding this death certificate?

Michael’s son, Dominick Cullen – my grandfather, of the same address – died on 18th May 1942 of old age and his certificate I found on the website, and likewise buried in Kiltullagh graveyard with his father and his wife, who pre-deceased him in 1925.

Dominick did make a will, or we are led to believe so, as he left two houses in the town of Ballinlough to my father and if such a will exists should contain all of this in detail. Just wondering if anyone has time, and/or know a source where such a will (if it exists) may be. I assume that in the year 1942 if you bequeathed property to your son that legally this must be in writing in some form of will, with a name change on the title, otherwise my father would not have been able to sell such properties years later!

I can tell you that in a court case (not relative to the above bequeathment) in 1940, my father was mentioned in relation to the said property where he was being assisted in some way financially by his brother, Joseph, when my father had been carrying out refurbishment work on the same house at this time.

This means we are looking at a date prior to 1940 if such a will exists. I am sorry for the long description but I hope someone may be able to help find either or both of these two documents

Doesn't look like Michael's death was registered. Not unusual.

I have checked the Calendar of Wills 1942 & 1943 but found nothing for Dominick Cullen.

I went through quite a few pages of deaths for 1881 in Castlerea registration district and didn't see any for Ballinlough sub-district. Can't say for sure but am wondering it that subdistrict just didn't get microfilmed.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Welcome to Rootschat.

I am not familiar with inheritance procedures but perhaps your father was the only surviving child of Dominick.
You may be able to follow ownership of his property through this site - you have to pay a fee.

Several years ago, I was able to trace ownership through folios from there.

My father was not an only son, he had three brothers. The eldest inherited the family home in Carrick, Ballinlough, Roscommon. The two houses left to my father by Dominick Cullen were situated in Station Road, Ballinlough, Roscommon, they were two terraced homes, but neither had a street number. To add even more confusion, the townland is also known as Falledeen, Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon, this I believe to be the more ancient name for the area. The two houses in question are still standing today with Lavins shop next door.
