need help locating Garnlwyd, Cwmdu--Maestag? 1858
« on: Monday 24 February 25 00:49 GMT (UK) »
William Hughes was born 1858 to John Hughes and Rachel (Thomas) Hughes in Garnlwyd, Cwmdu, District Bridgend.

From a Natl Library Scotland map 1820-1960 Maestag area  I see a Garn Road east of Bethania Street.  On the 1875 OS map for Maestag, Llangynwyd Middle I do not see anything called Garn or Garnlwyd.

Any help locating where this road or cottages were is appreciated.

There is an old thread about the Garnlywd Cottages, Maesteg that may be of interest.

Historic Place names of Wales gives the same map that Maddy has posted and lists the parish as Llangynwyd:   https://www.rootschat.com/links/01toa/

Thank you.

That looks correct for Garnlwyd.

Related question.

John and Rachel Thomas married 1854 Llangynwyd Parish Church.  His residence was Gamlwyd ? Cottages, Maestag and her residence was Craig y bedw Cottages, Llan: Higher.

i've located what looks like a field called Craig Y bedw to east of Dyffryn, north of Maestag.  Map says it is Llangynwydd Higher-maybe that corresponds with Llan: Higher.  This is from List of Historic Place Names website.
No cottages though.

I've not been able to locate Gamlwyd Cottges, Maestag.

Hoping for help on these 2 locations and thanks in advance.

I would think that this is actually Garnlwyd per your original post, but with the r and n squished together making it look like an m.

I think Jomot is correct after looking more closely at the name.  Thanks for the tip.

Looks like some buildings/cottages here at Craig y Bedw in 1875
