On page 3 of Technical Help, scroll down (after all these years I don`t know how to connect to it !!)and you will see I had a similar problem.

It worked for "me" !

Here's the thread you are referring to:

When you were checking the settings did you have the headphones plugged into the laptop. When they are plugged in the option for internal speakers will be disabled automatically.
Or maybe your laptop does not have internal speakers but that would be very odd.

Headphones were not plugged in. Even then there is no other option to choose from,  only  one  showing.
There is a feature to test them and it works.
There are 2 grills under the front of the laptop which I presume are speakers.
I'm struggling to find a manual for this model.

On the 23rd February I asked you to try plugging in a set of headphone.

Only now have you done so but you may be getting somewhere.

Connect up a HDMI cable from your laptop to your TV, with both powered down, turn them both on and see if sound from the laptop is coming out of the TV.  If not, go into settings and then sounds where there should be both laptop speakers and the make of your TV showing in the Output section.  Select TV and try again.

Hi, a couple of questions.
Can you advise which model of ASU’s laptop you have? This may enable us to give some more specific advice.
Secondly you say external speakers is the only option shown. Have you got anything plugged in to the laptop? Monitor, TV, any thing at all? It sounds like it thinks you do and is trying to use it.

That is really far too complicated for me.

Nothing at all plugged in.
Will have to check model tomorrow.  I can't attach images to my posts because of RC settings,  it's a long story.

I did try headphones before but they  didn't work,  it's only today that they worked, I have no idea why.
I was going round and round with checking settings etc . What happened I don't know.

In that case the best option is to take it to a repair shop.
