No sound on laptop
« on: Sunday 23 February 25 16:38 GMT (UK) »
I have been given an Asus laptop, the previous owner is no longer around sadly.
I have  never had a laptop before so it`s a learning curve.
I can`t get any sound, tried Messenger video call and playing stuff on Facebook etc, even though as far as I can see speakers are on full volume , but no sound. I have tried all the settings that I feel comfortable doing but still no joy.
The microphone works because I tried a Google voice search.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be.
Thanks

If the volume control showing on the Taskbar, if it is double click on it to open it up to see what it shows.

Do check if a key combination is required to adjust the volume.

If you have a pair of headphones connect them up and see if there is any sound from them.

If there is still no sound looks in the Settings specifically for Sounds, with an Asus you can have multiple options for the sound system to use, if you see a few work through each.

Assuming this is a device running Windows, what edition of Windows is it on? Has it received the last couple of monthly updates?

I've seen a few reports online of some issues with sound following installation of the January update but that may be a coincidence and unrelated. Unfortunately there was no published fix either.

It's Windows 10, it seems to have been installed 25 January.

Some laptops have a MANUAL switch or volume control. Check the manual
Failing that, update the sound drivers, and reboot.

I had something similar with the micrphone when we started using Zoom during lockdown.  Tried all sorts - thinking back I uninstalled and reinstalled Zoom and mucked about with various settings - it did work with a separate mike and eventually worked as it should.
Thinking on the same lines,  have you tried earbuds / head phones?   Does the laptop have bluetooth - could you utilise that until the speaker problem is solved?

Do you have a speaker symbol showing on the taskbar at all?
[Mine is next to battery condition, and showing with an x]
x signifying sound off!
