Yes and he is in Hammersmith in 1891 with widowed mother, Ann Mann and his siblings!

Herbert (incorrectly transcribed as Herbert C. Mann) - is a Private in the Royal Marines.

(Richard had died before 1881 as the family were still in Warwickshire then).

Big coincidence!

He joined the Marines in 1889 and his record is on the National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7764508    I can't see dates on the record post 1992

Still on the 'Mann' surname -- Ann Mann, Herbert Edward Mann's mother, aged 69 -- is in Willesden, Middlesex - visiting a family, who may include her married daughter. If so, this married daughter has named a son Herbert Edward.

(Oh dear I am getting hooked up on the Mann family now!!)

Sadly the mother's maiden name was Rose so using his mother's maiden name wouldn't work

Yes - I found Richard Mann's marriage. Herbert's marine papers may help. I am wondering if he 'abandoned' the Marines and changed his name. I am making things up now.

It's just SO strange that Herbert Edward Mann disappears and Herbert Edward Oakleigh appears.

Also that the 'Mann' family move from Warwickshire to London, where Herbert Edward Eastleigh first appears, with a birthplace of Warwickshire.

I looked at his marines records - free - and I can't see reference to him deserting but he did add a year to his age when he enlisted - born 6 April 1871
