Glasgow Poor Law records c.1870-1890
« on: Sunday 23 February 25 01:12 GMT (UK) »
I am looking to search Glasgow Poor Law records for a single mother born c.1949 that I expect may be found within poor relief applications.  Her daughter might also be in Separate children registers or Boarded-out children registers as she was orphaned in 1881.  From what I can tell the only records that exist for these are in the Mitchell Library.  I cant even locate an index online for any of these records.
I am in Canada and cannot access this library or records myself.  If anyone knows of any online recourse of an index or digital images for Glasgow poor law records I can search please let me know.  I emailed the library about having the staff search the records but have not heard back. Can anyone tell me if there are there volunteers located in Glasgow that would be willing to take a look while they are in the library? I can provide details of the persons of interest.

Hello,

Is there a typo in your message, as you have said that the single mother was born c1949 and that her daughter was orphaned in 1881?

The indexes to the Glasgow Poor Relief Applications are not online, and even in the library itself, they are only indexed by name (if I recall correctly) up to the 1930s at the latest. This means that the index in the library might not include the 1940s if that is the time period you are looking at.

I also think that to protect privacy of applicants and anyone who may have been named on the application who is still alive, I seem to remember that there might be a closure period on the files, so those from the late 1940s/early 1950s might not even be accessible yet.

However, if it is the case that you are looking for an earlier record where the person might be named in the index, I might be able to look for this for you, although this might take a bit of time as I think you still need to book an appointment at the archives and it would depend on being able to work this around work commitments, as they are only open on certain days.

Obviously, if the library staff can look for this for you, I wouldn't need to, so this might be the quickest option.

Best wishes

From what I can tell the only records that exist for these are in the Mitchell Library.
Correct. To be precise they are in the Glasgow City Archives which are housed in the Mitchell Library.

That will be because there isn't one.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

@Rockford,  Yes sorry, that was definitely a typo.  The Mother was born c. 1849.

Thank you @Forfarian for the confirmation

@ Rockford

I will try to have the library staff look at the index for me first, but I appreciate the offer of your help. I have emailed info @ glasgowlife.org.uk and libraries @ glasgowlife.org.uk but haven't had a response.  Just today I filled out the the freedom of information enquiry form on the GlasgowLife website in case that would speed up my request.  If you know of a better way I could contact a staff member please let me know (a more direct email for instance), I would appreciate it.  Otherwise, I'll try to be patient.

Thanks again for the help.
