Look up request William S Duncan death 1950
« on: Friday 21 February 25 11:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Just wondering if there is anyone who can access the Dundee Courier or Telegraph for around 28/2/1950.
A distant cousin William Suttie Duncan died in DRI on 27/2/1950 aged 34. From The death certificate I’ve managed to track that he married Betsy Gillian or Gillian Betsy in 1939. I can’t however work out if they had children.
They are no births in Dundee for the appropriate time period although there a couple that come up in Angus and further afield. However I can’t view them because of the 100 yr rule.
Just thought that if there had been a notice in the paper at the time of his death it might mention children they might have had.

TIA.

(Maternal)  Mitchell, Robbie, Duncan, Suttie, Orchardson or Orchardton, Dempster, Downie Guild, Gibb, Storrier, Murdoch

There is a tree on ancestry with the original copies of marriage and death for William S Duncan
you could maybe message them and enquire
There is a mention of one daughter Elizabeth Gillan Duncan born 1944 died 1993 Dundee

The marriages index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk lists the marriage of William Suttie Duncan to Betsy Forbes Gillan (not Gillian) in 1939 in St Clement (Dundee).

There is a birth of Elizabeth Gillan Duncan, mother's maiden surname Gillan, in 1944 in the births index in Lochee. There are three other births of Duncan, mother's surname Gillan, in the index, but one is in 1878 and the other two can be accounted for by another Duncan/Gillan marriage.

Elizabeth Gillan Duncan, other surname Craig, 49, died in Dundee in 1993, mother's maiden surname Gillan. There is a matching marriage in 1969 in Dundee, but I can't post details as the husband could still be living.

So I think the answer to your question is that William Suttie Duncan and Betsy Forbes Gillan had only one daughter, Elizabeth (1844-1993).
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks folks I misread the death certificate.
Looks like a bit of a family mystery here. William was a cousin of my mum’s but I’d never heard of him till a couple of days ago. Neither my mum, uncle or their cousins I was close to ever mentioned him. I once met his sister and was led to believe she was an only child.

The Courier and Advertiser, Tuesday, February 28, 1950.  Page 8, column 6.
DUNCAN.- At D.R.I., on Feb. 27, 1950, William Suttie, aged 34 years, or D.C.T.D., dearly loved husband of Bessie Gillan.  Funeral on Wed. at 3 p.m. to Eastern Cemetery.  Friends wishing to attend please meet cortege at Eastern Cemetery gate at 3.20 p.m.

I don't know if 'or D.C.T.D.' is meant to be 'of D.C.T.D.' but definitely says 'or' in the paper.
