street name
« on: Thursday 20 February 25 22:13 GMT (UK) »
hello I am trying to find where Cahir Street is i have a birth record from 1864 giving the address as Cahir Street and in a later sibling baptism record 1874 Cahir Road. on some of the records it states Cahir St Clonmel and the parish district ST Marys Clonmel. Cahir road still exists today can this be the same place on all entry's of the records.

thank you in advance of any replies

It gets mentions in the 1840s, but if it is still there, I would say it was renamed. I don't think it's Cahir Road. I suggest contacting the County Council or a local library and ask was it renamed. There are a number of streets in Clonmel that must have been renamed - O'Connell, Parnell, Kickham Streets etc..

It seems that Cahir Street became Albert Street, still in Clonmel today.

from Victorian architect: the life and work of William Tinsley by John Douglas Forbes

Quote
[referring to some time in the 1840s]

A group of buildings in Clonmel followed the completion of the Cashel workhouse. First of these was a "corn store" or grain warehouse for Thomas Hughes. Clonmel had become the first city in County Tipperary through its position as the center of a thriving trade in foodstuffs. Flour was the chief commodity and it was collected here for export by way of the navigable Suir.

As was appropriate for a man whose whole life was devoted to houses and building, William Tinsley invested his savings in real estate. After completing the grain warehouse he put up six cottages for rental on Cahir Street (later called Albert Street upon the Queen's marriage) and two houses and a market on New Street.

Presumably these are the same properties being sold in 1851 "having been erected within a few years"

Upon reflection, since Victoria married Albert in 1840, the renaming must have come later; perhaps it was in commemoration following his death in 1861?

Added: first newspaper item found with a search for “Albert Street Clonmel” is from 1859.

Having looked at the link provided by rathmore, and followed the link from there to WT’s biography I see that Adelaide House was Tinsley’s residence and that he emigrated to the USA in 1851, which provides a useful context for the 1851 newspaper item that I posted above,
