Peter.....

I have the same thing!!  Lewknor Uphill......  I did wonder if possibly when they were asked where they lived or were born, that the dialect had something to do with it???

i.e. meaning 'I live/was born in Lewknor up the hill'.  I hope this makes sense.....

Who are you researching may I ask??

Kind Regards

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I found this today which probably explains it:

Cadmore End parish registers: christenings at Ackhampstead (Ashamptead)
chapel 1786-97, 1800-1812, christenings 1813-1912 (to 1837 described as at
Ackhampstead Chapel, from 1838-1852 at Lewknor up Hill, and 1852 Cadmore
End), marriages 1852-1971, burials 1852-1972, banns 1890-1949.[FILM SERIES
ENG BKM 4]

It seems Cadmore End and Lewknor Uphill are one and the same. Lewknor and Lewknor Uphill are different.

Best regards,

Pete

Hello,
You are nearly correct Pete. Lewknor is not the same as Lewknor Uphill and Lewknow Uphill no longer exsists, but it is only part of Cadmore End.
Ackhamstead (ack as in old English for Oak, not Ash) Church was near Moor Common & Ditchfield, south west of Lane End. It had a small population, Cadmore a growing one, so the Church was taken down and rebuilt at Cadmore End where it became St. Mary-Le-Moor Church.
Later Lewknor Uphill was abolished to become part of Cadmore End.
Later Lane End had it's own church the Holy Trinity.
The boundary of Oxford, Berks & Bucks have also changed over the years making finding people on old census records a little more difficult.
Regards Vita.
