John Lahey/Leahy
« on: Wednesday 19 February 25 15:00 GMT (UK) »
I am having difficulty finding baptism of John Lahey/Lahay/Leahy born in Middlesbrough between 1867-1869 son of Jeremiah and Ellen.
Some of his siblings were baptised at the Old Roman Catholic Cathedral in Middlesbrough but I can't find his baptism. Any help would be appreciated. thank you

Hi Rosie, Ellen's maiden name was Gurran but it could have been misspelt, I will certainly look into it .
Leahy is spelt so many different ways it's difficult to trace through that way. Thank You for your prompt reply

There is a marriage for Jeremiah Lahey and Ellen Gurran in 1874 -several years after John’s birth.
Do you have the family in 1871?

yes, 1871 census shows Jeremiah and Ellen living with John and Catherine Leahey, what's confusing is that they both had sons named John born within a year of each other. thank you for your reply

I can see births to 1871 now - perhaps John  and Catherine’s children with mother Lally/Lully

There are these:
1868, John Lahey, mother Currigan
1869, Thomas Lahy, mother Gordon
1870. Mary Lahey - mother Gordan

Could these be the same family?

Then there is a Patrick and Margaret Leahy with their son John, 2 yrs.

it's so confusing isn't it, it's Jeremiah & Ellen's son John whose baptism I'm looking for. The family were Roman Catholic, I have found John's brother Jeremiah baptism at the old roman catholic cathedral in middlesbrough but can't find John's. I found John's marriage to Mary Hagan in 1896 at the old cathedral which confirmed his father was Jeremiah, I just can't find his baptism. Thank you for your time

OP - have you considered that Jeremiah might easily appear as Darby, or Diarmaid (and variations).
