Need help tracing Job Hughes, Carmarthenshire
« on: Tuesday 18 February 25 20:50 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor John Hughes, bachelor of full age, married Rachel Thomas 1854 in Parish of Llangynwyd.  John Hughes residence Glamwyd Cottages, Maestag, occupation collier.  Father Job Hughes, laborer.

John born 1830 per his death record and census data.

John listed his birthplace as Llanedy, Carmarthenshire in 1871 census.

i've tried searching for Job Hughes on census data, death data, general searches for Job Hughes to no avail.  No information on his wife's name.

thank you.

Is Job clearly spelt on the marriage cert or could it be John?

It looks more like Job, especially in comparison to John Thomas, father of the bride, whose name is immediately underneath

Yes, that census looks interesting.

1871 census for John Hughes and family in Pontyrpridd has boarder named David Hughes, age 24, which fits the son David age 4 living with father Job Hughes in 1851 census.  Maybe John Hughes' brother?  Although I've seen census reports list relation, not just as boarder.

are 1841 census data available to search?

I may be on the wrong track

GRO suggests mother's maiden name of Bevan for Jemima and David Hughes

Job Hughes, Bachelor
Margaret Bevan, spinster

Marriage    13 Jun 1835    Llangyfelach,

First Witness    Daniel Hughes
Second Witness    John Rees

ie after John Hughes was born

1841  Glyncollen, Llangyfelach

John Hughes 30  [image clearly reads Job]
Margaret Hughes    30
Jane Hughes   6
Margt Hughes    4
David Hughes    2

I think MB is likely on right track

There is a death of David Hughes age 2 from 1841 census same address Glyncollen

Name   David Hughes
Death Age   3
Record Type   Burial
Birth Date   1839
Death Date   abt 1842
Burial Date   15 Feb 1842
Burial Place   Llangyfelach, Glamorganshire, Wales

Another likely born in 1847
HUGHES, DAVID    mmn   BEVAN
GRO Reference: 1847  M Quarter in SWANSEA UNION  Volume 26  Page 533

Margaret dies between likely 1847 & 1851 census, as Job a widower. 1851 census above.

Marriages Jun Q 1860
Hughes    Job        Neath    11a   708
Morgans    Mary        Neath    11a   708

I think below census -  David is his & Jane is hers. Fits with Jane Morgan mother Mary in 1851

1861 Llansamlet
Job Hughes   47 Llannon, Carm
Mary Hughes   55
David Hughes   14
Jane Hughes   12

1871 - Job still with Mary & Stepson David Morgan age 32 at Llansamlet Job born Llannon

Possible death (if still in Llansamlet, registration would come under Neath. Maybe moved back)

Deaths Dec 1876  Hughes Job age 63 Swansea 11a 371
