You can do a witness search on there, and there were scores of marriages at St Matthew witnessed by John Smith. So it would appear likely he was a regular (unless it was a different John Smith!)
Maybe just as well!
William Pointer, however, seems to have witnessed just that one.
There is a William Painter marriage there in 1801 to Susannah Higgins. William was a widower.
Witnessed by John Smith.
So it would be good to check the 1806 marriage image, make sure it says Pointer.
Nothing in the Lichfield Marriage Allegations and Bonds database for Joseph Bannister and Catharine Holden. So it looks like it was by banns.
