Help to Distinguish between multiple Thomas Danning births
« on: Thursday 13 February 25 16:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello.  I am researching a Thomas Danning, born circa 1871 in Cornwall.  He was married in 1898 to Emmeline Stoneman, possibly aka Emma, born circa 1878, and they had a child named James.  The marriage was short lived, as Emmeline remarried in 1906 to James Ellis.

What is not clear is which Thomas Danning is the right one, as I can find three births for Thomas Danning in Cornwall around 1871 and I am uncertain which one married Emmeline.  These are the details I have

Thomas Danning, c 1871, Launceston, Cornwall, parents John William Danning and Emma Chubb
Thomas Danning, christened 24 Sep 1871, Lawhitton, Cornwall, parents John Danning/Dannon and Mary Heard
Thomas Henry Danning, born 1873 or 1874, Menheniot, Cornwall, parents Emmanuel and Mary Danning

There are two other potentially pertinent records.  A Thomas Danning, stated as from Liskeard in Cornwall was listed as a solider in Pembrokeshire in 1891.  I believe this might be "my" Thomas, as other members of his family definitely lived in Liskeard at some point.

The other record is an emigration to the USA in 1902.  Thomas Danning arrived on the ship St Louis from Southampton to New York on 9th Nov 1902 and appears later in a 1905 census in South Dakota.  I believe this is the Lawhitton Thomas, as he is listed as travelling with a Frederick Heard and a meeting a cousin named S Heard in the US.  The Heard name is nowhere else in the family tree I have researched to date.

I am currently working under the theory that the Thomas Danning I am researching, ie the one who was briefly married to Emmeline Stoneman and the father of James Danning, 1898-1976, is the son of John William Danning and Emma Chubb, born in either Launceston or Liskeard, and possibly later a soldier in Pembrokeshire.  However, given the patchy and conflicting evidence found so far, I am open to proof that I am chasing down the wrong Thomas.  Any assistance gladly received.

Hello Waughhunter
I'm no expert, but from the 1871 census (FreeCEN) i have found:

Danning, Mary. Wife, Married, F, 24,              Birthplace: Lawhitton, Cornwall.
Piece 2225, Enum district 4, folio 81, P15, Schedule 76.

Baptism from the Parish register (FreeREG):
24th Sept 1871  Thomas Danning. Place: Lawhitton  Church: Saint Michael
Father: John. Occupation: Labourer  Mother: Mary  Abode: Luccombe
Register entry No.664

Baptism from Cornwall OPC:
5th Feb 1902  James Danning.  Parish circuit: Liskeard
Father: Thomas  Occupation: Soldier   Mother: Emelene
Piece 2225, Enum district 4, Folio 81, P15, Schedule 76.

Marriage from Cornwall OPC:

Seems to be a lot of Thomas Danning's from North Petherwin!

I hope this is of some use.  :)

Who is the father on the marriage certificate? And Thomas’ occupation?
Witnesses?

Added… question partly superseded by occupation at James’ baptism.  (Did not notice that on first read through)

Thanks for the responses.  I have never found a marriage certificate for Thomas and Emmeline/Emma.  I found this on FamilySearch - https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/LBN2-DBN .  There is a reference to another child, Lily Marion Ellis, who I believe was born to Emmeline's second husband James Ellis, not to Thomas.

The information from the various responses above, I believe, allows me to rule out the Lawhitton Heard connection and thereby the emigration.  Incidentally I found a newspaper reference in South Dakota to Thomas Danning in 1896, suggesting that the Thomas Danning who emigrated to New York in 1902 is not the same one who appeared on the South Dakota 1905 census.  I am focussing on the Liskeard area now, as James (son of Thomas) and Emmeline (his mother) were certainly there in 1901.

Thank you for that service record.  Can I please have a link to that to study it more?
