Baptism of Joseph Whiffen Humby - Portsmouth
« on: Tuesday 11 February 25 19:32 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a baptism record for my 4x great Grandfather - Joseph Wiffin or Whiffin Humby. Born circa 1810 in Portsea, Portsmouth.

His Parents were Joseph Humby 1788-1864 and Mary Kingsell 1785-1854

It appears that his children were mainly baptised at the Orange Street Chapel, Portsea.

Can't find a Baptism for him, but he married twice, and had very many children. Tree online says he died 17/3/1883 Landport, Hampshire.

The Portsmouth History Centre has baptisms for Orange St Chapel 1785- 1893

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tsv/

It looks as though they have been transcribed on BMDRegisters

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tsw/

which shows several children of Joseph HUMBY being baptised but the earliest is 1812.

When he married Sarah Poole 14 October1829 he was of Newport Isle of Wight.

Ref: Hampshire Chronicle dated 26 October 1829

Married last week at Kingston, Mr. Joseph Humby, grocer of Newport Isle of Wight, to Miss Poole of Portsea.

In the absence of a baptism/birth record I had had a look at his marriage cert (1844) which confirmed his father as Joseph and the 1829 newspaper marriage/grocer link.

When did "Whiffen/Whiffin" begin to appear in the frame?

Daughter Martha Whiffen Humby reg 1838 mother's maiden name Poole.

The other odd middle name is Ozard

Joseph Ozard Humby 1834
John Ozard Humby 1842

Cannot find a Humby- Whiffen marriage  so perhaps from the Poole side of the family

Notes
1841 Census Portsea
James Ozard 62  - Grocer not born in County
Sarah 61                         not born in County

I wonder if Joseph Humby was his apprentice?
