Fred Sharp [1882-1962] of Halifax
« on: Tuesday 11 February 25 14:01 GMT (UK) »
I am filling in some details about Fred Sharp for my Calderdale Companion, and I have encountered a puzzle with his wife.  The only census that I can find (1921) identifies her as Margaret E. born in Halifax in 1888. An obituary of Fred's death showed that the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1958 (ie married in 1918). That census also shows children born in 1909, 1911 & 1921 (although I haven't found any likely candidates on FreeBMD).  Could Fred have been married before 1918?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Malcolm

Malcolm - if the article mentioned a golden wedding anniversary - the wedding would have been 1908.

Loooking at the 1921 census image, it appears that Fred's surname is SHARPE.
FreeBMD have a marriage registration in 1908 in Halifax RD where Fred Sharpe and Margaret Ellen Quirk appear on the same page.
FreeBMD have a birth registration in 1920 for Beatrice Sharpe with mmn of Quirks.
GRO have a birth registration for Annie Sharpe in 1910 with mmn of Quirk
GRO have a birth registration for Hilda Sharpe in 1909 with mmn of Quirk
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Oops! Thanks, Pennines.

I had never thought about searching for Sharpe because the name is recorded as Sharp in the newspapers and other local sources.

Perhaps I should go back to square one with this man.

Thanks to all who waded through my stupidity

Yes the 1911 census shows the couple have been married for 2 years - had 2 children born alive and 2 children still living.

Margaret about 5 years younger than Fred. The 1939 Register should give her exact date of birth (providing she has got it correct!!)

I couldn't find a suitable FRED or MARGARET / SHARP or SHARPE in the 1939 register, so I'll put this on the back burner for now.

Thanks again to all
