MOIR Henry and Robert
« on: Tuesday 11 February 25 04:04 GMT (UK) »
These men were privates in Lord Balmerino's Troop of Pretender's Life-guards. An entry in the Penny London Post or The Morning Advertiser 223 Jan 1747 page 2 has them being tried and found gulty of High Treason.  I am trying to find out whether they are linked to a Henry MOIR resident of London in the early 1800s. Have never found evidence of his birth or parents in London and family tales have referred to the family as being Scottish.  Hoping for a nudge in the right direction please. I am aware that my knowledge of this phase of  history is lacking.  Thank you, Jennifer

Do you have any information on Henry Moir more specific than 'London' and 'early 1800s'?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Henry was a compositor who worked at or lived in Bream’s Building (North of Fleet Street). he married Mary Errol on the 10th Sept 1804 at St Dunstan in the West.  His son, John Milton MOIR born 29th Nov 1804 baptised 🥚4th August (check year) at St D in the West. His son Henry MOIR born 13th August 1808 baptised at the Sardinian (Roman Catholic) Chapel 15th December 1808. That son Henry MOIR - later shows up as Henry Christopher MOIR) was caught pickpocketing and was transported to New South Wales.

So born 1770-1780-ish?

Quite a long shot from 1747 to 1770s - at best he could be a grandson.

What about Henry and Robert who were tried in 1747? Were they executed?  I had a look in A List of Persons Concerned in the Rebellion (available online) but they don't seem to be mentioned there.

I seem to recall not executed.  I am well aware that this is a long shot. DNA is a possibility as a cluster of descendants have tested and if we are lucky and some English or Scottish matches eventually show up it might mark a turning point.  I know it is distant in time but have had success with distant matches in the past in other family branches. I did this research many years ago and at that time searched exhaustively for MOIR records in London - maybe there are new resources available. I have other fragments of information but nothing obvious to lead to Henry’s origins.  Jennifer

I'm not sufficiently familiar with the available London records to know where to start looking!

No worries. I am going to start again from scratch, hoping to flush out some new information.  There is an assumption based on family stories that he was Scottish but how he came to be a Londoner is a mystery. Thank you for your interest.  J
