Rural Lancashire 18th Century
« on: Thursday 06 February 25 16:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for help with links to Internet sources for information about rural life in Lancashire in the 1700s, please, around Pendle and the Ribble Valley.

I've found bits and pieces in studies here and there but they mostly focus on the industrial revolution. My ancestors lived in Newchurch in Pendle and I've gleened some valuable information from the parish registers.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Amanda

You might try John Housman's "A topographical description of Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire ..." printed 1800. Lancashire starts page 106.

Hi

Thank you. I think my user name is also a giveaway as to where I was brought up.  ;D

Yes! I am so proud of the fact that George Fox supposedly had the 'vision' on Pendle Hill which led to the introduction of the Quaker movement. Not that I am a Quaker - simply that Pendle Hill is so well known for that and for the witches of course.

Such a landmark for the area, which we tend to take for granted on daily sightings.

Yes, I agree. I live 200 miles away now but always look forward to the journey back when it takes me back to Pendle. Admittedly, it now takes me longer to get up the hill than it used to.  :D
