birth info for Annan in Scotland

I have a query, if anyone can help.  I dont know where to look.

John Hamilton born 1828 in Annan Scotland.  I have the 41 and 51 census where John was living with John his dad and his new wife Jane in Penrith Cumberland.

His father born  1782 in Perth Scotland married a Jane Thompson in Penrith (Cumberland) in 1838.  She was also from Annan in 1809 but I dont think she is Johns mother but cant totally rule it out.  They went onto have other children.  I would just like to see if I can find any other info out on his birth in 1828.

There are no records for the HAMILTON name in Annan in that time period for both Church of Scotland and Catholic.

What are the details from their marriage cert?  Was Jane definitely a spinster?  It might be more likely that he is Jane's son, not John's, as she was also born in Annan.

This is the 1861 census on freecen. So wife and John junior not necessarily born Annan. As you say John & Jane may have been married before?

Debra, I never even thought that he could be Janes son, she would only have been 18/19 so could be illegitimate.  I dont have the marriage certificate, but might have to purchase it now, its such a shame you cant go back for birth certificates that early, thanks Angela

Where do you see Dumfriesshire?  The 1861 census records both as being born in Annan, Scotland.

I have the 61 census on ancestry and it just says Scotland Annan, no mention of Dumfrieshire, 71 says Annan for Jane, 81 and 91 just say Scotland, that if I have the right 91 as she is living in Northumberland as an aunt.  71 for John just says Scotland.
