Who did he marry. Ancestry say Emma Smith but a marriage certificate says Ann Taylor both are widowed. Looks like Stephen married twice.

Stephen's parents are James Gower and Harriet Shanks

Ancestry hints are just that - hints - not facts.   Haven't you looked him up on censuses?  Did he have any children.

1861 he's in Norfolk 1871 Suffolk & his marriage cert is online as well

Look up the childrens births on freebmd then use GRO online to find his wife's maiden name

Use free bmd plus censuses to establish if he married twice
