RASC Service Record
« on: Thursday 23 January 25 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My great grandfather served in the RASC in WW2. I have just received a copy of his service record and it stated he was posted to the 9th Training Battalion RASC on the 28th Oct 1940. Is there anywhere I can find more information into the activities of this battalion?

Many thanks

I think the clue is in the title.  He would have been undergoing basic military and then trade training in the battalion.  The RASC drove trucks, manned stores, etc etc so depending on what trade he was would determine what type of training he was doing.

Certainly RASC drivers were trained at 9 Training Battalion. He would probably only have been there about 2-3 months maximum before being sent to his first working unit. For some background on the wide range of functions of the RASC, see this thread on the WW2Talk forum: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/royal-army-service-corps-introduction.23787/

Incidentally 9th Training Battalion RASC was located at Alfreton, Derbyshire.
