John Goldney of Devizes
« on: Wednesday 22 January 25 14:01 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching the Gouldney/Goldney family of Devizes between about 1600 and 1660ish and having trouble finding any records during that period in Devizes. I'm trying to link John Goldney of Devizes will dated 1676, with John Farnewell alias Goldney, a son of Gabriel Farnwell alias Goldney, yeoman and Bailiff of Chippenham (bur. there 1639). The will gives the Administrator of John's belongings as Gabriel Goldney, Serge maker of Andover.
If someone can look in the Devizes bmd records during that period, or have any other info I'd be very grateful thanks.

There's a Chancery record in 1612 in which Gabriel Farnewell alias Gouldney of Chippenham is one of the plaintiffs:
Gabriel Farnewell als Gouldney of Chippenham, Wilts & his three children Gabriel, Henry & Anne

Still earlier, you can search the Common Pleas indexes, using wildcards.

Searching for Go*ldney, and narrowing it to Wiltshire, you will get 11 results, going back to Goldney, John, of Chippenham, gentleman, in 1483.

In Devizes, just Goldney, Robert, of Devise, chapman, in 1573.

Hi Vance. Thanks so much for your reply. I've had an interesting read of these links and the 1st Chancery on which I had seen ages ago was definitely worth a read again. I've got a slightly better handle on the family now and it indicates that in 1612 Gabriel had only 3 children alive then. He had married Robert Wrottesley's sister Elizabeth in 1588 (bur. Chippenham in 1601 as Elizabeth Farnwell I think) and they def had Gabriel 1589, Elizabeth 1592-94, Henry 1597-1601, Ann 1599-1616 and I think another Henry in 1601. The family is referred to as Farnewell alias Go(u)ldney from abt 1549! Online sources mention a son John born 1593 but I see no ref to him. There is a Jeffard Ffarnell / Goldneye bap 1594-5, bur 1596 so this might be a mistake. However this still leaves the mystery of John Goldney of Devizes died 1676 and his son Gabriel Goldney of Andover. Any more info to discover where they fit in welcome. There are a lot of Henry and Gabriel Farnwell or Goldneys to unravel in this family.
