William ROUNCE b 1793? Norfolk or Suffolk
« on: Wednesday 22 January 25 03:46 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for baptism for a William ROUNCE born c1793/1795? I have his marriage in 1825 in Gravesend Kent to Elizabeth NUNN. He lived in Little Thurrock, Thurrock and Grays from 1826-1849. I have 1841 census in Grays Essex and he was 45 yrs old but not of that County. His wife Elizabeth Nunn was from Fobbing and his children were born in Essex.  He was a brick maker and labourer in the brickyards.  He died in Thurrock Feb 4 1849 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Little Thurrock. There are many Family trees on Ancestry that mix him up with William Rounce born in Stepney 1790 and died in Stepney 1849. If anyone has any suggestions or has him in their family history, I would like to hear from you.
Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat.

What makes you think he was born in Suffolk or Norfolk? I see that he died in 1849, so 2 years before the 1851 census which would have given his place of birth, or at least a county.

 The greatest population of ROUNCEs seem to be in Norfolk and Suffolk at this time period. I believe there were no ROUNCE baptisms in Essex before this William ROUNCE arrived in Little Thurrock after his marriage in Gravesend Kent. It looks as though all of the ROUNCES in Essex originate from his family. There were very few if any in Kent and the line in Stepney are a different family even though the children have similar names.I am leaning toward Great Yarmouth and the possibility of Thomas Rounce and Sarah Soanes being his family. I have been eliminating William Rounces through marriages, censuses  and deaths. William Rounce bpt Sept 27th, 1797, St Nicholas Great Yarmouth is the only one I cannot trace so far. You are right about just missing the 1851 census. How inconsiderate of him to die before than time.

Yes I agree with coombs question.

Having said that I can see 2 bapt Norfolk;
3 Feb 1797 Banningham to WILLIAM/ELIZABETH, Elizabeth nee MARIS
27 Sep 1797 Great Yarmouth to THOMAS/SARAH, Sarah nee SOANES

Speling variations has a;
William RANCE 03 May 1795 in Egham,  Surrey to Richard/MARY

You would have to check if these Williams died young or stayed and married in those places.

Hello from Australia!

Thank you Coombs, Trish1120 and Jonwarrn.

Jonwarrn, I did have the death record from st Catherine’s BDM’s  and found the name William. The parish burial record has James as you have seen. I am sure it is the correct person but do not know why the mistake in name was made. I have no record of another name, middle or otherwise for William ROUNCE d. Jan 1849. I have his marriage record with only William.

Trish1120, I have eliminated William ROUNCE and Elizabeth MARIS through censuses and marriage. However I cannot trace William ROUNCE son of Thomas ROUNCE and Sarah Soanes so it makes me think that I might be onto something but I have no idea where to look next.
There may be records of an apprenticeship. The family did not have much money in Little Thurrock so there might be records of some kind if they needed help through the church. As William ROUNCE and Sarah Soanes were married in Kent, I do not know which parish they would have belonged to.
The surname RANCE comes up in Surrey so I will have another look. I have checked many name variations such as ROUSE, ROWNCE, ROUNSE, ROUNS.

The FreeREG marriage transcript says William Rounce was a bachelor, witnesses John Fretton and Nathaniel Humpage. It does not say if he was of the parish or not, nor for Eliz Nunn. Even if "of the parish", it could just mean he lived there at the time, not necessarily born there.

As said, as he died before the 1851 census and said "not born in county" in 1841 it is going to be more of a challenge to find where he was born.

William Rounce, my 4xGreat grandfather, has been my brick wall for some years. I have eliminated William Rounce b 1795 in Blundeston with Flixton and William ROUNCE b Feb 3 1797 St Botolph Banningham. I have also eliminated William Rounce born in Bengal 1791 to James Rounce just in case he came into Gravesend from some exotic place  :)
Thank you for your help
