Ernest Stanley Rookes
« on: Sunday 19 January 25 23:41 GMT (UK) »
My friends father: Ernest Rookes born 5th December 1919 in Barnsley England.
However family thinks he listed 13th December 1920 so possible he faked his date of birth to enter military early.

We do not know his parents names. And I can't seem to find him on 1921 census.

We know he went on to serve in the army. He was in the transport core for 2 years and went on to be a paratrooper for 4 years.

He was living in Northern Ireland after the 2nd World War.

He died 25th May 1995 and is buried in Carmoney Cemetary (East) in Newtownabbey.

It's a long shot... there are not many Rookes so I am hoping anyone with experience can help in this search or point in right direction.

Wanting to confirm date of birth and parents names. Any help is appreciated.

Do you know who he married? There is an Ernest ROOK (aged 24, Royal Air Force) who married 27 June 1942 at Handsworth, father Samuel James ROOK.

This Ernest was born 18 March 1918 and baptised 31 March 1918 (parents Samuel James and Ada) at St John, Park, Sheffield.

No use for Ernest, but birth of Mary Grainger at 23 Ohio street, so lived there her whole life ??  Until the 1950s as Mary Rookes anyway.
Died 1974, Newtownabbey?

There is a positive search result for a record of marriage on GRONI in 1942 for both names Ernest ROOKES and Mary GRAINGER.  If this is the correct couple you will need to purchase some credits to look at the marriage for his father's details.

There is this illegitimate birth, if he was born in December then the birth would often not be registered until the first quarter of the following year.

ROOKE, ERNEST  STANLEY
No mother's maiden surname indexed
GRO Reference: 1921  M Quarter in GAINSBOROUGH  Volume 07A  Page 1324

Thanks very much guys. Yes married Mary Grainger 8th July 1842 in St Matthews Church in Belfast. I got this from the Marriage Licience. But no mention of fathers. Would there be a separate marriage cert with this on it?

On the marriage licence his address was given as 183 Field Ambulance, H.Q. Marythan Hall, Rolvenden, Cranbrook, Kent.

As he is military is there any records pre marriage that may give next of kin?

Amazing work Dundee Debra on birth cert good lead. Why would mothers maiden name not be listed? How would I get a copy of this?

No maiden name implies, as Dundee said, that it was an illegitimate birth.
