Walker Family of Slamannan

Hi,

My 4th gt -grandmother was Jean Walker (1749 - ) of Slamannan, Stirlingshire.

She was the youngest of six children of John Walker and Jannet Gray.

Her Walker siblings were: James (1736 -), Jannet (1738 - ), John (1740 -), Henry (1743) and Thomas (1745 - ).

John Walker and Jannet Gray married at Slamannan on 6/4/1733. Jean's brother, John Walker, was baptised at Slamannan on 30th July 1740. It was witnessed by James Walker, whom, I should think, was either an uncle or grandfather.

John married Elizabeth Henderson at Falkirk in 1770. They had 4 children: Mary, John, James and Jean.

So, it would seem likely that the father of John Walker, who married Jannet Gray in 1733, was either a John Walker, or a James Walker, probably born at Slamannan.

There are several possibilities, from looking at Scotland's People, none of which are completely satisfactory.

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated, please.

John Walker and Jannet Gray married at Slamannan on 24 Feb 1733/4. (i.e before 1752).

The Scotland's People index gives the date for the record of John Walker and Jannet Gray's marriage as 6th April 1733 (perhaps the date of the actual marriage, perhaps the date of the initial contract - you need to see the full entry to know which).

Re your reference to 1733/34, unlike in England, the change of New Year's Day from 25th March to 1st January took place in Scotland in 1600. That means in Scottish records dates before 25th March from 1600 onwards are exactly the same as dates in the modern calendar.
