I have my Great Grandfather living on Hamilton Street in 1881 having moved there from Wales sometime in the 10 months before the 1881 census date. I've seen a number of posts about streets in the sub district of St Georges and wondered if anyone might throw some light on the location of Hamilton Street.

1915 is about as near as I can get - https://maps.nls.uk/view/126522836

(Just right of centre about a quarter of the way up from the bottom - west of Upper Jackson Street.)

Hi Jeff;  welcome to Rootschat!  :)

At the start of each census is the route the enumator took.  You might be able to zone in on it from it's surrounding streets.
Using a random address on Hamilton St., the 1881 enumerator for at least part of Hamilton, used this route:
Left hand side of Collyhurst Street from Hamilton Street to a point of the boundary line near the "White Hart Inn" along the boundary line to near the top of Percival Street.
Continue along the boundary to a point in a line with Churnet Street.  Left hand side of Churnet St. to Hamilton St.
Left hand side of Hamilton St from Churnet St. to Collyhurst St. including all the Houses, Courts, etc within the aforesaid boundary.

I get lost on maps, so I have not compared it the map Ray T provided.

Just for interest Ray T, you can link nls maps to a particular view by pressing the "Link to this view" at the bottom of the page, eg:

Welcome to RootsChat from me too.

Thought this map looked familiar - I helped someone find Lancaster St (just a few blocks south)  a few days ago. Strange coincidence. On that thread he provided a link to some interesting photos of the area.

Thanks for the welcome and all the information. I discovered the information about the list of streets just after posting and have since used that to find a number of locations where my grand parent and great grandparents lived. The Hamilton Street I needed is further out from the city centre and south of Queens Park and near to Rochdale Road. Thanks again for the advice and help

I couldn't match the map to the route to the census enumerator's route, but  I found the streets on his route, EXCEPT for Hamilton here (thanks for the "how to link" map, Maddys!)

https://maps.nls.uk/view/101103800#zoom=5.6&lat=3889&lon=2760&layers=BT

Could it have been renamed, and then used again elsewhere?   ???

Collyhurst and Percival make a V at the middle of the bottom of the map, and Churnet is right above the black rectangle in the Recreation Ground, middle of the top of the map.

Bbart,
Your map is correct, I think. You can see ‘TON’ , crossing Collyhurst Street and Charlton Street.
Looking at the other maps, they are showing a different Hamilton Street.

Here is another view - side by side - old and present.
