I’ve also noticed that street names could vary a lot – they were often changed or moved to different places. Maybe the Hamilton Street from that time is a completely different location than what we see on the maps now?  ::) Does anyone else have a clue or another source to confirm this?
Bbart,
Your map is correct, I think. You can see ‘TON’ , crossing Collyhurst Street and Charlton Street.
Looking at the other maps, they are showing a different Hamilton Street.

Here is another view - side by side - old and present.

Btw, it’s great that we can share map links here – I discovered that the "side by side" view is a total game changer! Thanks, Heywood, for pointing that out :)

Thanks for the welcome and all the information. I discovered the information about the list of streets just after posting and have since used that to find a number of locations where my grand parent and great grandparents lived. The Hamilton Street I needed is further out from the city centre and south of Queens Park and near to Rochdale Road. Thanks again for the advice and help

The one i posted is the correct one.
Orwell, yes often there is more than one street with the same name. Hamilton Street is not in a different location but does not exist there now.
Jeff gave the district in the initial post - first clue.
Bbart gave the enumerator's walk - second clue.
I looked for an address in 1881, in the right district - St George’s , and notice the ‘high’ house    numbers  so it was a long street. The ‘wrong’ maps show a shorter street.
Those first maps posted were from a different part of the city and i knew it wasn’t the right district.I am fairly local so that helped to find the right Hamilton Street in that area.

That area has been completely redeveloped but luckily Collyhurst Street remains as a focal point and, of course, Queens Park.( I drive past there every week).
I hope that helps Orwell. Other clues can often be found in redeveloped areas - if you look at the side by side maps, you can see Harrowby Street becomes Harrowby Drive - retaining the name for the new houses.
Welcome to rootschat too. 🙂
