His direct line includes Beadles of the Tallow Chandler's Company between 1927 - 68.  A period through the Indian Mutiny, Crimean War and death of Prince Albert.

Origin of surname appears to stretch back to mid 16th century so far. Perhaps connected to reformation ?

(The King James Bible draws a parallel between John the Baptist and Elias in Matthew 11:14.  American bibles use Elijah)

Vivian's parents are James Elisha (1850 - 1934) and Catherine Eleanor Doyle (1847 - 1930)

Vivian's brother Hugh Judkins Elisha (1880 - 1927) also did not reach old age at 47.

ALL of the Elisha's I have seen have Christian ceremonies throughout their lives. Some have been churchwardens and beadles.

William Elisha was Chair of Market Lavington Parish Council for 23 years.  Elisha Field sports venue named after him.

(Interesting that Elisha and Elias and other forms are interchangeable through time, location and choice of bible e.g. a very high ranking example is Sir Elias de Workesley a 11th century crusader buried in Rhodes).

Samuel Elisha and son Edward Elisha were Mayors of Shrewsbury 1725 and 1743 respectively. They were members of the Corporation of Shrewsbury and both practised as attorneys.  Edward Elisha was also a collector and items donated by him are in the local museum and town hall including a portrait of George I.

According to one researcher of Shropshire / Welsh FH , the surname Elisha is a modified form of the patronymic Elias.
Some evidence (suggestion) that Samuel Elisha's father was an Elias Evan or Evan Elias, a brewer / malster of Merioneth.
When Samuel (and his son Edward) became attorneys they used the King James Bible name form of Elisha not Elias.

So again there is NO evidence of Jewish ancestry.
